In Lofoten, we are doubly blessed, with the possibility of seeing the aurora from late August right through to early April, and the world’s mildest temperatures relative to latitude. In the depths of winter, however, we can get very chilly reminders of just how far inside the Arctic we are. And what do you do when the northern lights are putting on an incredible display, but your body is craving comfort and warmth? Well… what if you could marvel at the awe-inspiring northern lights AND enjoy coffee and cake, rustic charm and a roaring log fire? We happen to know just the right place. And what’s more, it’s in one of the two best spots in Lofoten for aurora-watching!

Låven café is a converted barn in the Hov Gård Riding Centre, on land that has been in the same family for seven generations. Large north-facing windows mean that the aurora is often visible from inside. Of course, you can see even more from outside. Located on the north coast of Gimsøy, there is nothing between the Centre and the horizon. If you’re visiting in winter and the cold becomes too much, in mere seconds you can be back in the antique-timbered cosiness enjoying coffee and sweet things until you’ve warmed up enough to go outside again. In autumn, you might be surprised and delighted to find that there is a little beach just across the road. And whichever season you come, because the camera can “see” what the human eye cannot, our experienced guide will offer practical advice on how to use your camera to get the best results. If, that is, you’re not so overwhelmed by the dancing lights that you forget everything else.
