The main stop is the Skrei Heritage Centre, home to the Lofoten Museum, Gallery Espolin and the Lofoten Aquarium. The museum provides an insight into the contrast between the austere living conditions of the fishermen and the luxurious lifestyle of the village “squire”, along with displays exploring Lofoten’s fishing history. The gallery features the people of Lofoten in Kaare Espolin Johnson’s loving portraits, among many other works. A wide variety of local sea life is on display at the aquarium, including seals, otters and the all important cod, or “skrei”, upon which the settlement of the islands was founded. Henningsvær sits surrounded by the sea at the end of a wild and beautiful road running alongside a bay studded with rocky islets. Found here are Gallery Lofotens Hus and Caviar Factory, two world-class galleries. Lofotens Hus houses the world’s largest collection from the late 19th century, the so-called Golden Age of North-Norwegian art. Caviar Factory shows international contemporary art of the highest calibre. But there are plenty of other things to discover as you explore the village and experience Henningsvær’s unique atmosphere.
