A short trip through an undersea tunnel brings you to the island of Flakstad. On the outer coast, facing the open sea, is the village of Vikten. A turf-roofed wooden building of unique design houses the glassblower’s studio, where you can watch him transform the molten glass into one-of-a-kind objects Across the road, in another distinctive building, is the ceramics workshop, where you will also find a café. The surroundings are just as special—the sea rolling onto a white sand beach on one side, spectacular mountains on the other. Even some of the rocks are works of art, but in this case, the artists are time and the elements. A 20 minute drive away is the picturesque and tranquil village of Nusfjord, one of three places selected for the European Architectural Heritage Year in 1975. There, you will have the opportunity to explore the historic buildings of this open air museum. There is also a village shop with displays of items from yesteryear, and a harbour lined with traditional fishermen’s cabins. This is your last stop before returning to Leknes.
