Sustainable Travel
Sustainability
As part of the travel industry’s sustainable development, we recognize our responsibility and commitment to protect nature and the environment. We want to create memorable experiences for our guests while minimizing the footprint we leave behind.
We are currently working toward environmental certification from the Eco-Lighthouse Foundation. As part of this process, we are committed to concrete sustainability efforts and continuous improvement in areas such as workplace environment, waste management, energy use, procurement, and transportation.
Our goal is to create experiences in harmony with the environment, nature, and local communities. We are grateful for the communities at our destinations and believe in supporting local partners. That’s why we donate a share of ticket revenue from our “Guided Tour to the North Cape” to Kamøyvær for maintenance purposes. In Lofoten, we also pay a fee for each coach group we take to Haukland Beach.
Sustainable Destination
Tromsø is one of 16 destinations in Norway certified as a Sustainable Destination. The Arctic capital is a popular place to visit, and sustainable tourism helps preserve the environment, local community, cultural heritage, and local economy. Earning this certification requires dedication and long-term work to systematically reduce the negative impacts of tourism.
In 2020, Visit Tromsø-Region AS launched a quality label for its partners—“Approved by Visit Tromsø.” This mark shows guests which providers are part of the organized travel industry in the Tromsø region. Arctic Guide Service is a proud bearer of the “Approved by Visit Tromsø” label.
What’s Next
Becoming a Sustainable Destination takes years of effort and close collaboration between local communities and the travel industry. By safeguarding local nature, culture, and the environment, strengthening social values, and operating responsibly, the goal is to ensure that a destination remains a great place to live—and to visit. In the coming year, we expect one of our other destinations—beautiful Lofoten—to be certified as well.
