Haugheia Hike
The hike starts in Leknes harbor, a point of reference that remains visible from the trail for much of our journey. A gentle, 2-kilometer walk through the local neighborhood takes us to the foot of Haugheia. From here, the adventure begins in earnest as we start the steepest part of the hike on a gravel road. This road leads us to the hiking trail, which continues along the ridge for the remaining 2 kilometers to the top, 151 meters above sea level.
While the summit offers a spectacular panoramic view of Nappstraumen—the strait which separates Vestvågøya and Flakstadøya, connecting the Vestfjorden with the vast North Atlantic Ocean—this hike is unique because every step offers a panorama. You are surrounded by a fairytale landscape of jagged mountains, brightly painted houses, and crystal-clear seas of an often almost tropical colour. A very popular trail among locals of all ages, this tour proves that even a relatively modest ascent can reward you with superb views.
For the most part, aside from the initial steep section, you are passing over fairly flat heathland. The path is well-established and easily accessible even on wet days. Even off-road cyclists use the path, making it a relatively undemanding walk. In the distance, you might see the lingering snow on the peaks of the Norwegian mainland. In the summer, closer to hand—or foot—common wildflowers can grow to a remarkable size because of the midnight sun. And while the wildlife possibly won’t get more exotic than the local sheep, you might see quite a variety of birdlife en route.
This is a leisurely out-and-back hike totaling 9 kilometers, and we make sure you have plenty of time to rest at the top and revel in 360 degrees of gorgeousness.
