In the Footsteps of Roald Amundsen

Throughout history, the city of Tromsø has been the starting point for hunting, research, and polar expeditions. Learn more on this guided walk.

On this tour, we take you on a stroll through Tromsø’s compact city center, founded in 1795, on Tromsøya and the adjacent mainland. Known as the “Gateway to the Arctic,” the city has launched many polar expeditions. At the Polar Museum, you will explore exhibitions and presentations that tell this story.

After the museum, we continue to Full Steam, where two and a half floors of galleries highlight maritime and fisheries history, as well as Coastal Sámi culture and heritage. From Full Steam, we follow Storgata toward the Fram Centre, home to a range of research and management institutions that focus on Arctic environmental topics. We pass by Polaria and Ølhallen, Tromsø’s oldest pub, once popular with fishermen and explorers.

The route may change based on the opening hours of the Polar Museum and Full Steam.
